SOIA is definitely my favourite Sunday summer place in Utrecht! Here’s why.
Outside of the busy city centre and just a bit outside of Lombok, on the west side of Utrecht, you can find this secluded local sandy! beach.
SOIA, an abbreviation for Strand Oog in Al, or literally translated Beach Eye in Al (who’s Al?), is one of the nicest places to chill during a hot hot hot Utrecht summer. It is a local beach bar with a restaurant that starts its Sundays with yoga, moves to a child-friendly zone during the midday and escalates to a full-blown flip-flop techno party. Every sunny Sunday (announced on Facebook on a Friday before) there is a free feestje where some of the respectable underground house and techno DJ’s play summery disco and Italo beats that can move even the stiffest planks. Maybe too optimistic, but do read further…
For music-lovers but non-dancers there are alternatives: you can take a seat on a wooden rooftop terrace with a view on the unique Hogeweidebrug (bridge), or a seat next to the Amsterdam-Rijn kanaal with a fresh breeze, or sip your drinks in the sand, or just pose at the bar chairs with all your Tinder matches at your disposal, in the flesh.
Whatever you choose to do, you will not regret spending a random Sunday afternoon in this sunny place with excellent music vibes. You might even stop complaining about the Dutch weather.
