Park Transwijk

Moving from Portland to Utrecht

In the Spring 2017, my husband, our 5 year old, and I moved to Utrecht. It has been one of the best decisions of our lives! We came not for a job, but for an adventure. To expose ourselves to a new culture and a place we’d never been to before. In less than a year, we’ve started our own businesses and have settled in. There is so much about living in Utrecht - amazing food, architecture, friendly locals, and a thriving international/expat community. I hope you enjoy coming along on our adventures!

Having moved to Utrecht from the Pacific Northwest (Portland, Oregon), land of endless hiking trails, waterfalls, and trees everywhere, I’m always on the search for nature here. I seek out parks, gardens, and any other nature rich places. For me, being outside in green spaces is the ultimate in mindfulness and relaxation. Just thinking about it makes me take a deep breath.

Park Transwijk - Community Garden

One day, my 5-year-old and I headed out to Transwijk park to enjoy the wide open spaces and greenery, as well as the playground and petting zoo. During our outing, we found a community garden right in the middle of the park! I love growing my own food and find it so satisfying to get my hands dirty, from planting to picking. I was especially excited to stumble across this!  This garden was run by Food for Good (http://www.foodforgood.nl/), an organization that helps to grow and sell food to the neighbors in Kanaleneiland. Anyone can volunteer, whether you have a green thumb or not. There’s also a community building for gathering and sharing a meal together. What a great find!
