The city of Amersfoort has recently become one of the most desired regions in the province of Utrecht to live, work and play. The last few years have seen record numbers of moves to Amersfoort, especially from abroad.
According to statistics released by the municipality, more families and young, two-person households from the regions of Utrecht and Amsterdam are moving to Amersfoort than are leaving. In cases of young families with children, it is often the case that parents will move before their children begin primary school.
But, that’s not all that’s bringing more residents to the picturesque city. Amersfoort has become a top destination for branch offices representing international companies, including Applied Medical, Friesland Campina, Yokogawa and Arcadis, to name just a few.
“Utrecht and Amersfoort have been declared the most competitive regions in the whole of the European Union,” said Dennis Sille, who studies these trends on behalf of the City of Amersfoort. He says, a secure business climate is an important factor in the success of the region.
“Internationals arriving in the Netherlands for employment make up a healthy portion of the population,” said Jaap Mos, Head of School at Amersfoort International School. “We have families here from Romania, South Africa, India and Egypt, and more are arriving every month.”
Amersfoort International School opened its doors in August as a result of the growing need for education for international families who are moving to the region from around the world. Amersfoort International School offers an English language curriculum and is a Candidate School for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP).
Mos has founded several international schools in the Netherlands and around the world. “International schools are a great reflection of economic growth in the region. Great places attract great businesses, worldwide,” he said.
